During the depression of the 1930s, every time there was even slight improvement in the economy, there were those who shouted from the roof tops "The depression is over, the depression is over" but, it wasn't . About the author:
In 1953 my dad moved from the ‘sticks’ of North Carolina to the ‘frontier’ of Hollywood, Florida, with a wife and two boys.
With my being in high school at the time, living was rough, so I had to learn fast and hard.
A picture of Hollywood in those days: Palmetto bushes everywhere. US 1 (the only highway to Miami from Hollywood, at that time) was a 1-1/2 lane 20 some, long, miles to Miami; If you met a vehicle coming or going either way, someone had to get on the dirt to pass. Property in West Hollywood was selling for $199. per acre and that with terms of $10.00 down and $10.00 per month, no interest.
There was no work for a boy of 14 years old, and it was very hard for my dad to pay the bills and feed the family. So like all young kids in my spare time instead of playing, I looked for a way to make some money.
When all else failed I started looking around for something to do on my own. After a couple weeks I found quite a few cars parked in people's yards for sale. Most of them were priced anywhere from about $15-$35. (Remember at that time you could purchase a brand new Chevy, fully loaded for $1475.00) So not knowing anything else to do, I figured I needed a car for my dad. I negotiated, working one off with the owner, and very soon I was a proud owner of a 1939 Plymouth. That was so easy I decided I would try again. So in a matter of a few days my dad had a yard full of cars. And I started my business career.
Most of the time there was anywhere from six to 12 cars in my dad's yard. Before long people were coming from all over Hollywood to buy a car from me. Now imagine me, a 14 year old, car salesman. Even back in those days, the state kept records of vehicles transferred from person-to-person, and before long that letter came in the mailbox telling me that I would have to buy a dealer's license if I was selling any more cars.
I figured a way around this; I just didn't transfer the cars to my name. And continued business as usual.
This helped developed my entrepreneurial abilities beyond belief. And from that point on I never had trouble making money.
I went to college in Arlington, Texas, in1957.
During that year I learned several good lessons. People are good and mean well. And when I got tied up with a magazine salesman that told me I could go door-to-door selling magazines and supply my needs while I was in college; well, I just had to try it.
After the first day I knew I had made a mistake. I believed in selling, but I believed I was selling the wrong item, when I found I had walked all over town and not sold the first subscription. I was tired, confused, and disillusioned.
Now at this time I knew I had to open my mind and figure a way out of my dilemma right by myself. I could not depend on my family back home to help me much.
So here's what happened; as I got up and went to the bathroom to get cleaned up to go to bed, I flipped the bathroom light switch, and the bulb blew out. And just as quick as that bulb blew out, the idea struck me that lasted throughout my College days and supplied me enough money to pay for my College and support myself in a matter of a few minutes each day.
See if you can guess what this is! Hopefully you got the idea by putting both of these items together and making one item that you can make money, and make it quickly.
Selling light bulbs door-to-door.
Okay this is the process I did, it worked then, and it works now. Most housewives will always forget some items when they go to the store. Light bulbs seem to be one of the main items that just cannot be remembered.
A brief synopsis is this... In Fort Worth, Texas, there was a store by the name of Leonard's hardware store; everything was cheap. With money in short supply, I went to Leonard's and purchased all the light bulbs I could comfortably carry in a tote bag, and started my door-to-door trip. My spiel was this as I knocked on the doors or rang the doorbells:
" Good morning Mr. or Ms........ I'm working my way through college and I have an item here that I know you need on a regular basis. I would like to sell you a supply helping both you and me. Please purchase as many as you need, or as many as you wish, I have both 75 and 100 watt light bulbs, and I know you need at least one or two in your outlets right now."
In nearly every house I stopped at, I sold bulbs. At Leonard's I had paid $.10 apiece for these bulbs. I sold them for a profit of $.40 each and sometime received a tip besides to help me with my schooling. In a matter of four days I had bought all the light bulbs that Leonard's had in stock. I was a regular at Leonard's, and the next month I had purchased so many bulbs from Leonard's that they dropped my price to seven cents each, and promised to purchase more and to keep extra stock on hand just for me.
This past week, I checked Home Depot, and believe it or not they had Phillips light bulbs on sale for $.10 each. Anybody want to start a new business?
Did I learn anything from the magazine salesman? You bet I did! He had the wrong item!
This endeavor worked so well for me, that in six weeks I had one year of college completely paid for, with almost enough money stored up to pay my way and support myself for the full year.
Will this work today for you? Yes, as a matter of fact and, and just before this report was presented to you, I in person, tried this again on the streets of our city, Lakeland, Florida. and saw personally just how great it worked. I could easily make a living selling light bulbs again at my age door-to-door, even though times have certainly changed.
Just think of the advantages if the need was severe enough; On street intersections, parking lots, Gas stores, churches, Anywhere there is not a regulation against it and you can get permission.
"In any business you must be a salesman."
Quote:
" The reason money doesn't go as far as it used to anymore, is because, people won't go as far to get it."
I found out long ago, there are people suited for business, and there are people who just cannot run businesses. Some of these people could not sell a dollar bill for fifty cents.
Today
is the tomorrow
You dreamed
about yesterday!

Chapter 1 …
Basics in construction of a Business
So, you want to start your own business?
I wish to give you enough information to immediately be able to start your business… But, I want to do it right, so you will stay in business. So, please bear with me while I give you some hard learned lessons that I feel will help you stay in business after you get started.
Lesson #1
The hardest lesson of all is to build a business from scratch and see it collapse in front of your very eyes, with there being nothing you can do to protect it; and no reason for it to expire.
Example:
In 1980 I started a great business, one of my ventures.
It was an air conditioning/refrigeration service business; it was named after me in that it had my name attached to it. I had gone to school for this venture at a local trade school and invested almost a year of my life into it even before I opened the doors to the public.
Day of starting came and I was ready for work, my work.
A year of preparation
The certification in my hand
The county license, insurances, bonding, tools, parts, truck, (lettered), and was gassed and ready to go.
The suppliers had been contacted and ready
The office in my home was prepared with phone and answering machine, file cabinets, and all needed supplies.
The business cards were printed, brochures had been handed out, and the classified ads had hit the street.
I was go for business
A lot of planning; you betcha!
It was like having my first child, EXCITING!
Now what happened was I was in business for myself, and by myself. I made all the decisions and assumed all the responsibilities. If I made money it was mine, if I failed it was me to blame, no-one else.
I did not fail!!… I made more money in two months than I had made in the last year working for another person’s business (and not air conditioning Refrigeration); This was a completely new venture to me, and I owned my business. Failure never has entered my mind....So what if I failed; just do it again and again! Attitude Remember this...
As the year ended and my taxes were figured to file, I had made a net of $84,000.00 after:
All my expenses were deducted.
My allowance for using part of my home as office.
All my truck and tool depreciation.
All the painting I had done in my office; the shrubs I had planted around the house.
All the advertising I had done to get started.
All the sleepless nights of what I would do the next day, with or without business.
What I would do with the spare time I would have when my new boss (ME) would let me go fishing. The vacations my family would have after all the missed ones my previous boss denied me. First year I took a 7 week family trip on a new motor home I had purchased.
$84,000.00 Net was a lot of money for a person who had made$24,600.00 gross the year before working for someone else. Plus I had some spare time… first since I took the public job 18 years before.
Now the heartbreak…
I had done so well that when a friend of mine came to me and offered to buy the business at a good price, I was eager to sell, knowing that I did it once, I could do it again. Attitude Remember this...
AND I DID!
I went back to trade school and again I opened another business.
This time a Satellite dish and communications business. Again, I did well and really was very satisfied with my effort; business blossomed for me.
But not for the friend I had sold the air conditioning/refrigeration business to… He went broke and out of business in less than a year! Attitude Remember this…
More heartbreak;
The Satellite dish and communications business got so large that I moved to a strip mall and continued there until I was offered a tidy sum for that business. And yes I sold out to another person, who in less than nine months had drained the business, not replacing any real effort to keeping it going and was forced to close, sending the employees, I had accumulated, to the unemployment office. Attitude Remember this…
Now more heartbreak;
In the meantime I started a residential construction business. Yes I was now a licensed residential contractor, building homes and additions.
After 9 years of great work and a good living I decided to retire, so I gave that business, and a million dollar license, to my youngest son. And retired at the ripe old age of 56.
He has now dropped all the construction and is just working himself in ‘re-screening’ pool and screen room enclosures; Not wanting to continue the trade. I had employed up to 23 people to help me build. Attitude Remember this…
Now more heartbreak…
In the 1960's, at SBHS in Hollywood, I knew a boy who was voted #1 not to succeed in life. He had such nicknames as 'Spider'...'Fish'... and a few more I cannot say in this book. He was uncoothe, with dirty clothes, unshaven all the time. His real first name believe me or not was 'Hossel'.
Hossel started a lawn business in what is called 'Millionaire Row', the Hollywood Boulevard of today... Hossel, just had the 'Business Attitude' and before it was over he had claimed all the yards along Millionaire Row as his own, to cut and keep up. Before 30 years of age he was a millionaire over with many crews working keeping the yards of millionaires nice, installing sprinkler systems and the lot. Attitude...Remember this!
Last year I backed members of my family (grandson) and purchased a full compliment of lawn mowing equipment. Yes, all the extras, because they wanted to get into the lawn, tree removal and stump grinding business. A GREAT business here in central Florida.
Yes, you guessed it, I am now the proud owner of all that equipment of which they paid nothing for and had nothing to lose if the business closed. Plus I helped advertise and footed the bill to get them started. Lack of effort…lack of interest…and I don’t care attitude …. because I don’t lose if I quit, you do!
Clue: They lost the chance to ever have that chance again. Attitude Remember this…
Now what are you learning from this? (I hope!)
It appears that if it is given to you; and you just do not earn it; There’s no reason to fight to make it work. Is that what YOUR business is all about?
If you bought a business; is there no reason to not fight to see it go and grow?
If a going business is given to you is there any reason you should not care for it as if it were your ‘child’ or your best friend?
Now for the effects of owning your own business.
It’s your best friend
It’s your second lover
It cares for you no matter what
It will feed you and your family
It will give you happiness and joy
It will bring you hard work
It will give you the extras in life
It will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer
It will teach you to love
It will teach your children values
It will last a lifetime or more with your family
It will replace your old boss with a new one
It will give you a reason to live again and again
You fill in the hundreds I left undone…
The one I love most; It’s YOUR baby, all YOURS, all the blood, sweat and tears; YOU birthed it, diapered it, fed and nourished it, YOU raised it…It’s YOURS and YOU made it work… just YOU!
Important note here:
You do not need any of the above to start your business…. Just get one thing, an occupational license from your local court house
and get started. A Business Attitude works every time.
All the rest will take care of itself in time.

Chapter 2
The Outline to start your business today!
Get up early and get your coffee, breakfast and mind together. Today we go to the County Courthouse and get as much done as possible.
We go to the Office where the occupational license is issued. This office is called and administered by different branches; so go find it. You will only start with 1 employee so get the cheapest license, You can, grow bigger, later. The license you will get if you live in Florida will be a miscellaneous contractor license, and should cost about $22.00. With it you can work, legally 10 employees, to get started, even though we will assume you to be the only one working for the beginning.
You can get this license immediately, and by law you can legally conduct a Service Business ‘RIGHT NOW’ as soon as you walk out the door, in that county anywhere in Florida.
Also this license should allow you to purchase materials and supplies at the wholesale level from suppliers.
Next we will assume you have picked out a name you will be doing business under, as it was needed for the occupational license. You will need to run a ficticous name ad in a local paper if you do not use a portion of your personal name in the business name.
If you have chosen to use your personal name, ie. Mario’s (front or last name ok) Snow Blowing co. in your business name, a fictitious name ad is not needed, only if you are doing business under a name not associated with you individually.
If you have decided to use a totally un-personal name, ie. The World’s best Snow Blower Co. You will need the ad run in the local paper. The Paper has all the info and forms and should charge you $15.00-$20.00 for running that ad. You will get the paperwork at this time from the newspaper, you need not wait until it runs to get your occupational license. Start your business NOW, before you get cold feet and start thinking bad thoughts. (I can't do this...)
The newspaper notifies the state for you at this time, and you are through with this. Just hold on to this paperwork for later.
If you are going to charge sales tax The next stop today is the State Revenue office in your county.
Get around this if you can by not charging the customers sales tax...just pay taxes on your materials, and charge the customer just for the job, charging no taxes! and make it easy on yourself. Lot less liability and paperwork to be filled out each month.
I must say this again....
There you will fill out papers to collect sales taxes for them from each sale done. (If you can skip this in any possible form, my advice is to do so. It is a very aggravating chore and must be accounted for each month.) If you are selling a product this is mandatory. If you are providing a service, you need not collect sales taxes.
Also if you pay sales tax on a product, at your supplier level, you need not collect sales tax as it will come out at a later date.
At this point, stop and take a break and eat a sandwich. We’re almost half way done today.
Stop by your favorite Insurance Company and talk with your agent about coverage on the level you need. Miscellaneous contractors usually will need General Liability coverage.
At this time wait until you actually need insurance; but … In Florida the coverage amount is $300,000. (General liability) Don't sweat it, it's relatively cheap and you can make payments.
Remember now you are legally in business! Tread softly until you feel your way. Do not damage any property or hurt anyone. Remember we live in a suit crazy world and there are plenty of attorneys waiting for your money. (Just check the Yellow pages in your phone book.)
Remember that you are ,at this point, able to engage in business and make a profit…and you’ve only been working at it ½ day! Right now you can do the rest of organizing at a later time and start doing business NOW. Attitude Remember this...
...All They Thought I Deserved Was a Measly $6.25 a Freakin' Hour!"
(Ever felt that way working for the other man? Remember he was once where you are, he just got tired of it.)
Chapter 3 …
Pace yourself, spend money only on what you must have as you build.
Creating your new office
(Remember what one thing you learned in chapter 2 ….
You are in business with that one license…. LEGALLY.) GO GET IT!
When I started my new business, I was fresh out of school, l had very little money to work with, and so my new business was established in my home.
If this is your case, here are a few suggestions.
Pick a large room in your house that is not being used; the larger the room the better. You'll need privacy at times too!
Getting used to the room and laying it out will be the hardest thing to accomplish.
Make sure you have privacy, and if the door does not have a lock make sure you place one on it, as you will need privacy.
My first office desks were four 24" by 80" luan doors. I chose these doors as desktops because they could easily be replaced in case I destroyed them. I now have 4 computers with all the add-ons on them. But after years, the door blanks were the best of ideas.
In these doors I cut holes for my computer wires, screwed them to walls, and began to get my business together.
After getting my office together, I began to accumulate office supplies. So let’s start the supplies needed to begin a business.
Business cards ( a small supply of 250-500, you will change them)
Brochures
Classifieds.
Fax machines; be sure to get a fax machine with a built-in speakerphone. A plain paper fax may be used as a copy machine.
Computer with printer [at least one] I now own 7 and keep different info on all them; Scanner and speakers. Get the best computer you can afford but don’t go overboard.
File cabinets can be purchased at your neighborhood goodwill. I would suggest a four or five stack steel file case. Not a letter file.
A paper shredder in business is very important.
You will need two phone lines, one for the business and one for the computer unless you have all-in-one cable like I have. The business phone line should have caller ID, and an answering machine.
A big wall map or atlas for logistics and area plans is necessary and keeps you oriented for business.
Here are a few of the desk supplies you might need: Several different types and color reams of copy paper.
Stapler [if you’re planning on doing book work printing your own, might I suggest Swingline's long reach stapler that reaches 12" from the center.],
Three hole paper punch
Color pens
Whiteout
Highlighters
Adding machines
Printer inks
A corkboard with pushpins
Six or more clip boards
A staple puller
Scotch tape
Glue stick
Large brown envelopes for receipts. (KEEP ALL Receipts!) Just push-pin one on your wall. I use 10" X 13".
Legal envelopes
A digital camera
A small Digital recorder. I use a 90 hour Sony. Cheap and easy (less than $25.) Sony has a model ICD-8300 that you can plug into your computer to keep audio records of contracts, etc.
Wal-mart has 2' x 3' cork boards and push pins to keep all business cards given me. You need to keep contact records, as they forward business to you.
Plenty of light, movable swing lights are the best.
A cell phone with cheap long-distance.
CDs for backups not floppies. (Or jump Drives for quick and portable files.)
Comfortable office chairs and furniture.
Make sure you have a good surge suppressor for your computer, or a battery backup.
My suggestion is you can find a lot of the office equipment on Ebay at a cheap price. Or at goodwill outlets. Used office furniture stores are scattered all over.
I cannot over-emphasize the importance of plenty of light in your office; you’ll be up all hours of the night if you do business right. ( I think best just as I start sleeping, and must get up and write or record ideas.) I keep a digital recorder in my shirt pocket at all times.
I buy gallons of orange juice for late night snacks. The orange juice is not fattening, contains calcium, and with its natural sweetness helps keep me awake while I think, and work.
A good filing system is a must. Before you start business I suggest a 4 drawer (folder type, not envelope) upright to get the system in place before you need it.
Get plenty of refrigerator magnets for the doors on your file cabinet; Quick notes go here for later analysis.
All these items are not needed until you actually need them. If start-up money is short get what you need at the time you actually need it.
Chapter3 ….
Extra innings in Business
(Some pitfalls to miss, if possible)
NOTE: Your business probably should be set up as a 'subchapter S' or a 'sole proprietor' business. Never start with a "C corporation", as you will be taxed twice on it at years end, and the Government agency auditors will come out of the woodwork looking at you..
At the writing of this revision of ‘The BOOK’….in November of 2009, I must look back at some of the mistakes I have made in business and hopefully bring them to your attention. I do not want you to fall into the following situations to harm you and your business.
In 1991, I got involved with an uneducated
partner; uneducated with business proto-call and uneducated with finances…. Basically a ninth grade education and worse of all, an alcoholic. But he had a terrific idea....He not only was a born looser in business but has since spent time in prison for selling Subchapter ‘S’ stock in the business to outsiders in an effort to raise his own paycheck.
Totally ‘illegal’ he sold $36,000. of this illegal stock to family members, and those persons had absolutely nothing to do with the business.
Let me backtrack for a minute or two. The business was an absolute gold mine as it has an aluminum structured screen room for all types of RV’s.
So I set the business up, built the ‘jigs’ and provided the financial support for the product.
If you know anything about RV’s, you will know the names of Camping World and the Dometic Corporation. Two large dealers we had sold and cultured business with; Giants in the RV industry, they bought our product.
Camping World even gave our business a $10,000.00 ad in their summer catalog.
We had grown to employ 8 and looking to expand in the spring. I had negotiated a 6000 s/f warehouse; business looked so good in the near future.
To be sure we had enough business for our employees, on slow days I wanted to prefab pool enclosures and screen rooms in our spare time.
He would have none of that…. We were in his business and with 51 % of the business he had controlling interest….BIG MISTAKE!
If you do not control the business…. 'Then it ant yours'.
To make things worse we/he hired one of the partner’s friends as a salesman, a real crook.
Now the spring was on it’s way and the corporation (them) decided for me to take my wife and motor home and head north to create thought I was keeping up pretty well from a distance, with the business.
At the end of the trip north we came back to shear chaos. The partner had used most all the money on personal things and drank most of the rest up.
But a better-one yet he placed a ‘RESTRAINING ORDER’ on me to keep me out of my own business.
Moral of this MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS story is this: Dealerships are great but... Don't kill the big boys over the little ones that will quit on you.
Leaving the business in the partner's hands was the grinding end of the business.
We (My wife and I) motorhomed through seven states and created 53 dealerships….Each dealer’s requirements were they had to buy the first room addition at regular price to become our dealer, then we supplied them, at wholesale, all the rooms they sold. Quite a good venture being it only took 5-6 rooms sold to pay the rent on the warehouse each month. Another 3-4 paid all the rest of the bills.
My wife and I were gone 5 weeks, and did quite well building dealerships.
REMEMBER....If you do not have controlling interest in the business…. Then it ant yours!
In short I forced him into a buyout, which I got one monthly payment and after that he spent the next 10+ years in prison; but I could see it coming for us both and I got out. He just refused to go by ‘GOOD BUSINESS PRINCIPLES’.
This loss cost me over a quarter million dollars…. You do not need a partnership to make a great business.
That's why you fired your boss originally, Remember?.
Lesson learned…. And why did I go through all this?
To keep you from making this same type mistakes.
Chapter 4 …

At this time www.Godaddy.com. domain names are selling for $17.90 for a 2 year purchase. A dot com name is recommended but not essential, you may use any of the domain registers; .net, .ws, .gov., etc.
Do you have hosting? Godaddy has hosting starting at about $80.00 per year. The cheapest is all you need to get started unless you plan to use a lot of graphics or pictures on your new website.
Do you have frontpage extentions on your computer? If you do you are set. Frontpage has a tutorial that guides you through the process of building your website.
Do you have Microsoft Word? Microsoft Word is the platform I use to build my website before transferring it to the website on the internet. Instructions are also found there in the frontpage tutorial on your computer.
(Further instructions may be found in the Signature Series of Microsoft Word 2002. and may be purchased at the book store at most colleges or checked out at your local library.
NOTE: If you have Dreamweaver Fireworks or access to the program, I feel it is a better designer for your website than Frontpage. Whichever you have available will do just fine. Dreamweaver is expensive at approximately $650.00 at this printing.
Now comes the hard part! Deciding what to sell or promote.
Take a good look at what I call a $10.00 site. www.askbil.com. I use these sites to make money on a regular basis and when they begin to dwindle in producing a profit, I change them only by offering another product; not by changing the site.
(If you notice: The askbil.com site has a product priced at $20.00 with a CD of the same product.
Now picture this; my domain name cost $17.90 for 2 years. My Hosting cost was $84.00 per year…. total of about $100.00 per year per website.
The first product listed on this site was guaranteed 5000 hits on an opt-in email list sent to 5000 persons at a cost of $54.75. So at this point I have $155.00 invested in the mailout and the website…plus my time in producing the site. {Understand, I have absolutely no computer training. I have learned this all by myself.} So anyone can do this!
First month: 163- $9.00 purchases and 17- $15.50 purchases, for a total of $1715.50. Not bad for a new site, huh?
After paying $.90 for shipping each CD, I made a profit of $1715.20 less the $155.00 paid for the site leaving me a total of $1560.50 for my efforts.
Now remember… I still have 48 weeks paid to sell this and other products, and on just 1 website!)
This done in approximately 6 hours of time. Now are you interested?
~~~~~
Do you have the want too? Most of the previous information is easy… the learning part is the hard work.
Knowledge in your head is money in your pocket!
Now here is some information to speed your success:
If you should need to email hundreds or thousands of persons who need your information. Or if you would like a membership of optins who cannot declare you a spammer. This business also will send your emails from their server.
Remember this;
You do not need a website to make money on the Internet.
The www.askbil.com website is a standalone site. However the information has been passed to my customers by creating the site on a Microsoft Word page and then inserting it to an e-mail campaign. When the customer makes the purchase of the information the solution is simple; just send them an e-mail with the information as an attachment. Problem solved.
In the case of the e-mail with the attachments, the www.askbil.com information has 22 attachments and takes 26 seconds to send to the customer’s address from a dial-up connection.
The only problem associated with this type of campaign is if it is successful, it can keep you quite busy sending emails. But remember in this case… each e-mail is worth $9.00 and well worth the effort in that even $9.00 a minute is pretty good money to get your start.
Also, to make $14.60 on a CD that actually costs you $.90 cents to burn and handle and ship, adds quite a bit to the bottom line in your checkbook.
Sound like something you would like to try? Getting started is just as easy.
You just have to want to do it!
Now what are you learning from this? (I hope!)
It appears that if it is given to you; and you just do not earn it; There’s no reason to fight to make it work. Is that what YOUR business is all about?
If you bought a business; is there no reason to not fight to see it go and grow?
If a going business is given to you is there any reason you should not care for it as if it were your ‘child’ or your best friend?
Now for the effects of owning your own business.
It’s your best friend
It’s your second lover
It cares for you no matter what
It will feed you and your family
It will give you happiness and joy
It will bring you hard work
It will give you the extras in life
It will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer
It will teach you to love
It will teach your children values
It will last a lifetime or more with your family
It will replace your old boss with a new one
It will give you a reason to live again and again
You fill in the hundreds
...............I left unsaid…The one I love most; It’s YOUR baby, all YOURS, all the blood, sweat and tears; YOU birthed it, diapered it, fed and nurished it, YOU raised it…It’s YOURS and YOU made it work… just YOU! Attitude Remember This
Important note here:
You do not need any of the above to start your business…. Just get one thing, a license from your local court house
and get started.All the rest will take care of itself in time.
Sales are where it is! Outside sales will always have an advantage over the working abilities of hourly wages or salaried employees. The limits of the sales force will always be according to the techniques and time invested and the shrewdness of the salesperson. Hence, the salary will always be commensurate to that person’s effort and abilities.
your complete Business-In-A-Box.
Selling light bulbs was a lucrative business for a college kid. This has been discussed at the onset of this booklet. Email the webmaster if other information is desired.
Sell on message boards. [Wal-Mart, etc.] Message boards will have an appeal usually when persons have a need for a particular item or service. Items or articles, which are sold by the store usually will not be allowed nor posted for long. Information about an article or items will last much longer. Services to be provided may be placed on a continuous basis usually with no problems.
Discussion forums, and advertising. Advertising is not allowed on forums. But if you are shrewd enough to get on the forums, you should be able to get some advertising before being shut down. Plan your words and push the limits. There are thousands of forums, and may be seen on the internet search engines under forums.
Cleaning new houses for builders. I, being an ex-builder, have used house and job cleaning ladies to ‘run-through’ a new home and clean them before carpet was laid. Their jobs consisted of scraping excess paint from windows to vacuuming drywall dust. Anything that needs to be finished before the customer takes possession and the bank finalizes. Payment can be as high as $750. depending on the size of the house.
Be an affiliate to day, sell someone else's product.
An affiliate has their own hours and their own business. They sell another’s articles and set their own price. The affiliate usually is not bound by any contract as he or she owns their business and therefore cannot be controlled by others except by contract previously specified.Be an associate today. Sell someone else's product. Usually an associate will work for someone else as a member of the team. They are expected to follow team rules and pricing. Their own hours usually prevail and they are classed otherwise as being in business for themselves but liable to the company they represent. This book and information is a perfect example of being an associate. Associates usually sell other person’s products as though they were their own, under contractual obligations and conditions.
Be a FINDER, look for newspaper articles. Match sellers and buyers. A ‘finder’ matches buyers and sellers, for a fee, Usually classed as the middleman. Many million finders make up the everyday money decisions in the world each day.
Thanks Dave, and then you established another business for our members. Dave has been working at this project for several months. And during that time he has located some discontinued clothing, tools and many other items that he has provided to some of our local retailers. He has also provided several automobiles at a profit to other people looking for that special automobile.
Dave says, the sky’s the limit and he fell right into his niche. Dave says he loves what he’s doing and only works a few hours each week.
Dave says of the 100s of people doing what he is doing, no one has even touched the surface or interfered with his finders business. He says there is room for all comers; and where there is a buyer and a seller of anything, his service can thrive.
Yard/garage sales for resale. Yard sales are beginning to be a big thing in this country. Money is made usually on the 3 weekdays of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Many people sell items of their own to put quick money in the family coffers. But many others will run the weekend trail early hoping to get the ‘good items’ for resale later on. Some will wait till later in the day and make a ridiculous offer for all things left so as to make a profit at a later sales date themselves.
Here is an example of Nelson, and his wife:
Nelson and his wife have been in the yard and estate sale business about 18 years. Nelson is proud to say that is the only business is ever been in.
He and his wife, Shelley, own a two half-ton van truck with which they leave early in the springtime headed north. They run a regular area of yard and state sales gathering up merchandise that they take to Florida, where they live full-time, and sell at flea markets.
Nelson is very proud of what they do, and he says it Has put his children through school and provides a full-time income with part-time work.
Be an Ebay instructor (affiliate). Teach or provide an Ebay store or site for sellers. Have you ever visited Ebay and seen the merchandise bought and sold each day on their sites? Someone has to build the stores and provide the sites for the people who offer these items to the world. If you’ve ever been to any of these sites you will see they are quite complex especially the storefronts. EBay offers to the general public, an associate who will help them set their sites up for a fee. The fee is set by the associate teacher, somewhere in the neighborhood of $100. not a bad price for a few minutes work if you know what you’re doing. A three day course will usually let you be an associate in a certain ZIP code area. The cost of this is usually somewhere around $165. but if you’re computer wise, most people with a little advertising, can get their money back in one day.
Sell items on Ebay. Ebay’s statistics tell us that over 800,000 people have bought or sold on ebay. I personally have had a store and a site on eBay. However I have found that most items sold must be carefully considered, especially if they are run to auction. Not all items will sell; and some of those that are auctioned will not bring enough to cover the price of the auction itself. However, if you are in need of a quick income and have the merchandise, eBay is there to help. Also if you’re a buyer eBay has just about anything a person would like to purchase, available and at a very cheap price.
There again if you do not know how to put up a site, there is a link placed by eBay to help you locate an instructor in your ZIP code, or at least close by.
This instructor is placed in this link to either help you establish your store or site, or to place your merchandise on the instructors site for a commission.
Sell items on storm pay.
Storm pay is just beginning their auction web site. It is a new site with a limited appeal. It basically works like eBay, but as it is a new venture for storm pay, there are still not a lot of people who know about it.
For those of you who like eBay, storm pay might be just the thing for you. At this point they are cheap, and their auction is free to the public. They also offer a storm pay credit card or debit card along with their storm pay merchant account.
Larry D. said that the best day of his life was when he got the idea to have signs printed and to stick them in the ground each weekend, the signs read:
"Car, truck, boat RV detailing …
Larry’s wife is Best.
863.937.6xxx"
Oh Yes…. Didn’t I say Larry’s wife was the business owner?
Also she has several women helping her when she gets over loaded with work. Amy says her girlfriends usually want to work part time only, so she pays them cash for their time.
Replace screens in doors/ Windows/pool enclosures, etc. In areas where pool enclosures and screen rooms are prevalent, invariably screens will blow out, animals or children will tear them out, or rot will over come the fabric and it will just fall out.
In most cases the customer does not know what to do or how to go about replacing their screen. Sometimes the screen is in high places, and high places scare people, so they need someone to replace and redo. If you are apt at learning and are not afraid of heights, this might be the business for you. With today’s new aluminum the old round spline is a thing of the past, and of the new flats spline is in. A little practice might just give you a new business. If you live up north in the cold climates, you might even start a new business in your area.
At this writing, rescreening is being estimated and sold for $0.95 to $1.35 per square foot for a total pool rescreen, when the walls are 8 foot high or less; over 8 feet high walls are selling for $0.10 per s/ft more each foot higher on the highest walls, on the total area. When measuring a pool enclosure (28’x32’x8’) the estimate would be 28’x32’=896’ for the roof and if you have 4 walls, 8’ high the footage would be 28’x8’=224x2 (short side) or 448 s/ft, plus 32’x8’=256 or 256x2=512 s/ft. (long side or 1792 s/ft total area. If you were charging $1.10 per square foot your estimate would be $1971.12 to your customer. (In our area this is a small pool enclosure. John says the average size is about 3800 square feet. (Or $4000.00 estimate.)
If you have learned your trade, your cost for screen and spline should be about $300. on the smaller example, and the job can be done in 2 days easily with the proper tools, says John.
Not a bad profit ($1675.00) for 2 days work.
This is being done daily by John at E---- Screened Rooms.
Congratulations John, we’re glad we were able to help you find a new vocation. And we are even more pleased that you were able to establish yourself and your business out of your home. Evidently business is good to you as we saw your new Toyota pickup with your signs advertising your business, in our town, along with the new trailer and your ladders and tools. Keep up the good work we’re proud of you.
Pick up aluminum cans and extrusion alongside road, parks, restaurants, etc. Ever since glass and aluminum has been made, there are people who are bound and determined to fill our ditches and roadsides and our parks full of this used product. In an effort to keep these areas clean a new business has developed, the recycle industry.
Many people in this type recycle industry are making a living and providing for their family just picking up scrap aluminum and glass. Aluminum prices never go down, as it is called a precious metal. It is placed right up there with platinum, gold, and silver. And at this writing, recycled aluminum coil [any thin piece] is selling at the $.40 price per pound. Extrusion is selling at $.58 to $.59 per pound. At this time. All you need to do is find your location, carry plenty of plastic bags or garbage cans, and get your exercise at the same time you are making your Money.
Be a handy man or woman around someone else's house. [In your neighborhood]. In today’s environment, many people work hard, and do not want to be bothered by everyday chores, so ‘walla’, a new business is established. This is just a thought but if you have a few tools laying around, and old pickup truck, and the wish to start this type business, have at it, there is plenty to do and surely the customers are available, as usual you might run a classified ad in your local newspaper to get a start. In these days out of two or more person family incomes, this type of business goes great. As people get more leisure time, more spendable income, this type job will get more prevalent.
Be an errand runner [grocery buyer] for the elderly or sick. Thanks for the idea, Jane.
Jane tells us in a letter to our Webmaster; "I was doing some favors for my grandmother in a nursing/assisted-living home, and was asked by several other live-ins if I would get groceries for them and pay some of their bills while I was Uptown. After doing this for a while I decided it would be a vocation for me as I was finishing up my last year of high school.
I started out not charging anybody anything, but decided that if I was going to be taken advantage of they would have to pay. Since then I have charged a moderate amount for my services of buying groceries, paying bills, and doing about anything anybody wanted to do that could not do it themselves. (Later I found out that some of these sweet, old, rich ladies had been paying as much as $16.00 for a taxi to take them to town, and again to get home!)
Having now finished at my school, I plan to offer my services to other persons who are in assisted-living facilities, for a fee, and let that help pay for my college education.
I have a good start, and a lot of paying customers. Now I am going to college in my hometown this will suffice for me all the money I need to get my college as I am living at home."
Do you know a trade? Teach it to others [computer instructor or musical instruments, etc.] We have had so many letters in this category is very hard to pick out any one to place here.
The listing speaks for itself, and basically if you have a trade, or you have a vocation you can teach others for profit.
In establishing a business for this area, all you need do, is to follow the business plan.
A computer technician will usually draw about $65 per hour for his abilities and knowledge. While a piano teacher might draw the same amount or more depending on his or her skills. Other vocations such as business trades, or certain service trades, or even yard work or ditch digging will provide regular income if promoted correctly.
Usually trades like this come, equipped with the knowledge and audacity to do the job, and all that is needed is probably an occupational license in your area just to show that you’re in business. General liability insurance is not usually required unless you get into structural or business that requires you to be liable to the customer.
Be a caterer, cater parties, reunions, be a planner. And in these days in times when people do not have time to do what they need to do, and to provide for their families and schedule parties, catered affairs, and as such; it behooves us to have assistants to do a lot of the work for us.
Caterers of all kinds can be found in the telephone book, just look at Yellow Pages. There again, usually all you need to do this job, and to make illegal, is virtually just an occupational license from your County Courthouse. However you my want to include business insurance in your program, then you may feel free to advertise your business and operate it according to your wishes.
Be a house watcher while owners are gone on vacation, or animal watchers. Keep the key to the house, be the emergency contact. There again this is a business that we get so many letters from. It seems to be one of the favorites for high school kids and even college kids trying to other education. It gives some time to study, and yet they’re able to do their job, which is to house set, or animal sit.
In some house sitting, animal or phone sitting positions, light chores may be required to fulfill what the homeowner is expecting. This still it is a light, easy job that will allow you to study and accomplish your financial needs.
Letter mailboxes/paint street numbers in front of homes. Roger, sent us a letter about his new vocation.
In his County, the county commissioners passed a ruling, when the new 911 system was placed, that all of the houses on the streets had to have numbers placed in clear sight so that emergency vehicles could see the numbers on the house.
Roger immediately came up with the idea to provide the complete county with numbers both painted and purchased from the local hardware store.
His idea went over great, and he was in business.
Roger, at this point as the county sewed up tight as he is the only one painting and numbering the houses other than the customers. This placed Roger immediately in business.
With over 180,000 homes and businesses in Roger’s County, it appears that he will be busy for quite a few days in the future.
There again, Roger says all he needed to get a start in business was an occupational license from his local county courthouse, several cans of different colored paint, and an account at the local hardware store.
Be a Black-Ball’er; [get paid to tell someone how someone else feels about them.] Now, this was a vocation no one would ever have figured happening.
Ivan, was one of those college kids that was full of spunk and spit.
Ivan, writes us this letter:
One day I was messing around with my friends in a hallway at school, and one of my buddies said, why don’t you go tell that guy off for me. He’s been talking mess behind my back and telling my girl I’m running around on her. So I just jumped up, ran over to the guy, and gave him what for; Boy did I tell him off good. My buddy was so impressed with what I did he pulled out a five dollar bill and handed it to me. You will never guess how many five dollar bills I have collected for being a smart Alec around school. It’s a good business. Now everybody wants me to tell everybody off. It’s a lot of fun and I have made quite a bit of money.
Newspaper delivery/brochurehand-outs. Another one of those not so good jobs, at least I thought.
Paul writes: At 15 I was passing out newspapers on a route, like every boy in the United States has tried at one time or another. One-week the newspapers forgot to insert the brochures in the newspaper. So they called me and informed me that they would pay the delivery newspaper price to get these brochures handed out in my area. I, of course I jumped right on it as that gave me another twenty-five cents apiece for delivery. Some of my customers, not knowing where the brochures came from and not knowing the newspaper had not included them in their daily newspaper, thought I was printing and passing out my own brochures, advertising their business.
With a loan from my dad, and some assistance from him we went into business. I sold advertising and promoted a lot of businesses in my neighborhood. My dad was in advertising and he taught me a lot about the business. I just cannot believe how easy it was. One of my neighborhood printers was eager to help me in this situation and gave me all the advice I needed and taught me more about business than my school ever did.
Automobile/RV washing/waxing /detail- ing in owners yard. 'We come to you' Arlene, Rachel, and Patsy were tired of doing carwashes for the football team, and every thing the school asked them to do.
Neither one knows where the original idea came from, or who thought of it first. But they all agree that it was a good idea, and came from our web site membership businesses.
All three of these girls got together with their buckets, sponges, wash clothes, water hoses, and squeegees and began providing a service for the city folk.
The magnetic sign on the side of their car says exactly what the heading says:
Automobile/RV washing,waxing
Detailing in your yard.
"WE COME TO YOU"
858-XXXX
Congratulations young ladies, you seem to have made an impression on the neighborhood.
Be a home typist -- medical profession needs you. Sarah Writes: I joined the membership early this year. I had been wishy-washy for about six months, not knowing what to do. I had tried several jobs that never worked out because I small children at home. All the money I made at any job I got went towards babysitting and expenses. Anybody who had been in my type situation, knows exactly what I mean. I joined the membership with money I needed for other things, but one of my girlfriends insisted that it was the best money I could spend.
After joining, a person who had a business in the membership like this contacted me, and advised me on some of the directions I needed to go.
Thank you ever so much for the help and the new business. I am in business for myself and can work it now on leisure time after I put the children down in the afternoons for their nap and in the evenings when I need to finish a client’s paperwork.
I am in a position to take or leave clients, and do as I need, to supply our financial stability.
If you own a computer, logon to www.searchcactus.com, immediately by just joining. Fill out surveys for quick money. Taking surveys and filling out forms is not for everyone, but for those who choose to do this, they are doing quite well.
There are also many web sites under the listing for surveys, or fill out surveys for money on the Internet.
If you choose to go this route, make sure you contact reputable firms, with well-known products that you can count on.
There are fly-by-nighters, that see a profit and are just there to separate you and your hard-earned money, so be careful.
Most of the reputable firms offer you the advantage of doing a survey for profit for them at no cost to you.
By the way, this webmaster knows personally several people, especially ladies who are homemakers, that makes a good living from surveys and coupons offered on the Internet. One letter, in our files, from a lady in Ohio, Nancy, who says she makes over $400 every week doing surveys. She says some of her surveys pay her as much as $40. for a half-hour to 45 minutes of work.
May you all be as prosperous in this in this vocation, as Nancy.
Start your own vehicle tune-up shop. A lot of men grow up working on vehicles. And a lot of men never grow up, they continue working on vehicles. This is one vocation that seems to come naturally to most men, some more than others. If they’re not working on their vehicles they are always working on someone else’s. Why not do it for profit and start your own business in your backyard. Evidently, if you are tuning up your own vehicle, and that of the neighborhood, for free, you should have the tools to start your own business for-profit. It appears all you need to do is to start charging for your services.
Do you have a digital camera? Take pictures in the park or other places for a fee. Needless to say we get a lot of letters stating that fact that we have membership in business doing this. It’s a sample fact with the advent of the digital cameras, this is a good business and growing. Need we say more? Go and do thou likewise!
Ebay/Stormpay items, look for items that are poorly listed or under-priced and purchase for resale. Especially in eBay, we have found many, many items that may be purchased at almost rock-bottom prices. A lot of items are priced in bulk and may be broken down and sold a single units. If you’re into by now and resell in the future business, eBay definitely is a place you should check out for great specials and bulk items. Storm pay is new at auction products, so the bulk items will not necessarily be found on their auctions.
This Webmasters office stays full bulk items bought from eBay; purchased with the sole intention of resale.
Get yourself a mentor, a person who is doing well, then pattern yourself after him or her. Jealousy is a great item; to the person who thinks for themselves, it can create loads of business and business ideas. We here at askBil, are continually bombarded by membership asking how do I go about starting out in business. This is one of the best items that I can tell you about, as it relates to mentoring. Mentoring is just the process of finding someone you like in business that is doing things right, and prospering in business, making money, and enjoying life, and do it exactly like they’re doing.
Mentoring is like following a rich person around. Every time he picks up his foot, you place your foot in his footprint and do exactly like he did to the best of your ability.
Become wildly successful stealing proven and tested ideas! See what and how others are doing. certain things you'd like to do, and you do it too. [I have made thousands of dollars using this method.] Sometimes you cannot always come up with the items to make you wealthy right by yourself.
Our files are full of bright young men and women who regularly see a good item or business to build on, and literally steal that idea only to prosper better than the person who originated the idea. I personally see nothing wrong with infringing on a person’s business example and furthering it for competition. Remember the old saying, "competition is always good for business". That is why, when you travel down "hamburger alley", you will always see a Mc- Donald’s very close to a Wendy’s, a Burger King, and other quick food restaurants, they know competition draws their type business.
How to turn your fax machine into a moneymaker. This Webmasters office has two fax machines. Both these fax machines stayed busy quite regularly and produce a lot of income.
if you have a fax machine, [hopefully a plain paper machine] learn to use them properly and develop a program for sending faxes for people who do not have a fax machine. Remember if you have a plain paper fax machine, it can always be used in an emergency as a copy machine. Remember were after making money, no matter what it takes, each item in your office should be making you some money or it is totally useless to you.
Guaranteed money on a rotator basis. (Rotator means a forced income without working at all. A $25.00 one time investment will return multifold over the years)
This webmaster joined this system, and return was over $140.00 in 3 weeks with 39 hits, but has slowed. Check it out, see if it is for you. As in all ventures nothing is guaranteed but for a one time investment, $25.00 this is cheap.
The rotator is done by dedicated server and cannot be manipulated, and is legal.
How to make money on the Internet. Not all people on the Internet are making money! Not all people on the Internet are making money! Need I say that one more time? Not all people all the Internet are making money, and all those with web sites no matter how nice they look, are making money.
How do you weed the web sites out that are not making money? You do not need too. You don’t care how much money they are not making what you’re trying to do is to produce an item that will make money for you.
This is one of the items that stymie our membership more than anything else; how do I make money on the Internet.
There again the plan … find that Mentor, and go and do thou likewise. Find the plans that suit you and follow every step of the way.
Start your own firewood business free, or cheap. Wesley, one of our membership writes: "After just messing around for most of my young adult life, I received an e-mail from askBil.com offering a solution to my life with multiple business opportunities. The one I chose that suited me most, with my limited education, was the lawn business. I felt like after being interviewed, that I could make a business out of this. I started a business called 'Spring Fever Lawn' Care with my mother, who also was unemployed. We started it together, and after two months I began to get people asking me to trim trees and to remove them, including the stumps. Now that gave me a fourfold business. Number one, keeping lawns beautifully cut. Number two, trimming or removing trees. Number three, after removing trees, I was left with the stumps to grind. Number four, I was left with the wood from the trees which I either had to haul to the dump and pay to dump them, or cut them up in to cordwood and sell to people for their winter fireplace fuel.
By the way, The Bar-b-que restaurants in our area buy all the oak I cut and split for their cooking.
Now you see I have four businesses that developed out of my one effort.
Thank you askBil, you gave me the original idea and the rest just worked out for me.
Own your mobile locksmith business. Sammy, a middle-aged man in his early forties had a problem with downsizing at work.
Sammy had 22 years working for the same company and then they decided his job was no longer needed.
Sammy had been sent an e-mail in one of our campaigns. Upon looking at our promotion he figured he would give us a try, after all for less than $30., What could he lose.
Just one look at the list of businesses he could start and Sammy was convinced owning his own mobile locksmith business was the thing he wanted most.
Sammy owned almost a new van, so he decided this would be his work truck. With proper leadership from one of our members who was also a locksmith in another area, Sammy was in business.
Sammy had to want to, Sammy had the ability, all that was left was how do I start, and how do I get supplies, and where do I get the education to do this business. information was provided through one of our membership.
Start your own Hubcap business.
Deon was a winner in all respects with his hubcap business. A bit of thinking when he went to buy some used parts at a local junkyard put him in business. He needed 2 hubcaps and asked the owner what he would charge for the two because he didn’t know if they would fit his wheels. The owner came right out and said ‘nothing …. I don’t save hubcaps’; go get what you want; if it’s on any of the junkers it’s yours!Now Deon has a small chunk of property on a 4 lane highway he had been conned into buying years before and had wondered what he was going to do with it … NOW he knew. He and his sons ran several rows of chain link fencing on the property to hang hubcaps on by the pairs or in fours … They advertise themselves being right on the road.
Now while his sons take the hubcaps off the ‘Junkers’, Deon sells them on that "Useless piece of property".
Deon says he and his 2 sons make a real good living.
Start your own carpet cleaning business. One of our membership Stan, wanted his own carpet cleaning business. He wanted it so much that he started it in a most unorthodox manner; he rented his equipment from Winn-Dixie to get started. But the matter of how he started doesn’t matter, he did it. Stan was very dedicated and knew from the very beginning that he was going to have a very successful business.
Stan was very lucky in one respect because immediately when he started his business the hurricane season started and there was a storm brewing. Before the storm passed over, Stan was waist deep in jobs, as were most carpet cleaning people. The storm had left multitudes of homes with water in their floors. A lot of the homes instead of replacing the carpets, they were cleaned, saving the homeowners and insurance companies a lot of money in water damage.
Stan was not only cleaning carpets, Stan was cleaning up financially.
Since his carpet cleaning business inception, Stan has added several trucks and employees to his business.
Start own house/apartment cleaning business
Make big bucks with garage sales. After reading our business owners guide, Bill and Maggie began going to garage sales. Bill wanted to concentrate on electric items and bicycles. Maggie wanted to concentrate on baby clothes and baby furniture. After just a few weeks on the road going to garage sales, both Bill and Maggie had rooms full of baby items and used bicycles.
Bill bought a large-size utility shed and had it moved to the backyard, where he started a business rebuilding and selling used bicycles and bicycle parts.
Maggie has started a consignment shop for baby clothes and furniture out of one of her rooms and has since moved her business into a small strip mall.
They both credit this book and its membership with helping them get started in business.
Best of luck Bill and Maggie.
How to make cash with your car, or other vehicles. Dawn writes in her letter to the membership: "thanks guys, for all the information you gave me to get my business started." I had wanted to go to college for years and just could not figure any way I could financially do it until I read your book. Just to let you know my boyfriend and I have been running around town with magnetic signs of our doors advertising for some local businesses. We don’t make a lot of money, but then we don’t need a lot as our interest is getting our college degrees. We make about $100 a week a piece, just driving, and where we would normally go anyway and parking our vehicles in prominent places so people can see the advertising. Thanks loads.
Oh, and by the way, my boyfriend and I are in the process of purchasing some signs to go on the back of tractor-trailers, listing some of our customers who sell nationwide. One of our friends whose dad owns a trucking firm is going to carry some of our signs nationwide on the back of his trailers, and on the sides. (Small 24x48 inch signs for the top of the doors.) All it took was the suggestion and I’ll buy $100 of fuel each month per truck. My national customers are willing to pay $200-$250 a month to advertise their products (seen by thousands). So thanks to your information I’m able to make $150 or so off each sign placed on a trailer. Thanks again, Dawn.
Nora May, in writing her letter to us as to how she made money with a home business guide book suggests that you use the format of the hard book used on this web site. She entertains that she has produced three books that have made money using the same effort put forth in the hard book for this site. She maintains that all you need is the information or topics to go in the book. Nora May produced her first book by her computer by using eight and one half by 11 inch sheets of paper folded and stapled in the middle and titled ‘Old Indian Recipes’. Her first book contained hand-me-down recipes from her Seminole mother. She also credits this web site with her success.
How to make money at flea markets. One of the best ways to find to make money at flea markets is first to physically visit Flea markets and get a general consensus of how they operate.
A manager at any local flea market can give me all the information you need to open a booth and get your business started.
The manager or any other people at the stalls can inform you of the rules and regulations in place at any flea market. Usually when you register and pay your rent for your stall or booth, a sheet of rules and regulations are generally given to you. They usually are fairly specific and contain all the legal information needed to operate your business, such as how to collect sales tax, and whether or not you need a license to do your business. usually ensures is left up to the business owner. After all, is your business. Then it is up to you to provide all the items you plan to offer at your booth for sale.
Flea markets usually run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and during that time you are usually expected to be in your booth or seeing that someone else represents you at your business.
Other than that your willingness to work three days a week instead of five or six or seven to make a living, is up to you.
Organize your time to start a home-based business. With our complex life today the hardest thing to do is organize and find time to run a business; especially a home-based business. Today most people can find time to watch TV, which is the hardest trait to control if you wish to have the business in your home.
But if you’re going to have an in-home business you’re going to have to learn to control and use your time profitably.
It is absolutely based business to be able to turn everything of except the business. That is why anywhere in this booklet we stress having an independent room completely shielded from the outside noises and attention getters. You must have peace and quiet to be able to open a business and maintain it on your premises while everything else around you goes on as normal.
Business, especially a homemade business is very complex. It takes a lot of time, engineering, and effort on your part to make it work. You must learn discipline.
When everyone else is watching television, and you know there’s a good program on or a movie you wish to see, you must know that the business comes first. You must have the dedication and discipline to maintain and operate your business. this is essential if you have a home-based business, or any business whatsoever.
Remembering us with your last letter.
Start your own window washing/tinting business. Eduardo lives in a gated community in West Palm Beach, Florida where the residents own their condominiums and apartments. A lot of the residents do not have outside patios especially on the second and third floors.
Eduardo states in his letter to us that living in a place where Ocean Spray and atmospheric conditions keep your Windows cloudy all the time. It was very aggravating for him to be able to see out, after all that’s why he lives in West Palm Beach, for the scenery.
One day Eduardo, was washing his dining room windows in preparation for placing a window tint on them to protect from the glare of the blazing sun, when an elderly owner approached him thinking him to be a tint contractor, and asked him just how much he charged to place film on his windows. Before he knew it Eduardo was besieged with offers to do other owner windows.
Eduardo, knew in an instant he was in business. This was a godsend for him as he had wanted a business of his own for quite some time. He writes, "Man this was right up my alley, and I needed a job and instead, fell right into a good business. I had never done any tinting before but after watching it being placed on my car windows I knew I could do this. And on flat windows this was a breeze." Thank you guys for the help setting up my business and the information you gave me. This was truly a miracle.
How to choose the right bank for your business. Whether you choose a bank or a credit union the choice should be yours. But here are a few items you might look at when establishing a business account at either.
What is the first impression you get when you walk in? Are they too busy for you? Are they glad to see you? First impressions usually are the best. If the vibes are not there, and the situation is not satisfactory, leave and go to another bank or credit union.
What about cost? Can you write any amount of checks or are you tied down to just a few a month? Are the checks free? How much does a monthly service cost? Do they offer other business services? Do you get your paper checks back or do you depend on copies? Do they offer a debit card? Do they have an ATM? Are there charges to their ATM? Do they require a savings account to back up your checking account? Do they offer online banking?
Remember if you have made a mistake in your banking or checking account, you always have the ability to check other banks and credit unions out. The proper bank is the businessman or woman’s best aid. They determine whether or not you are able to get a loan for your business in the future, should you need it, and help control your credit factoring number.
Start your homemade booklet business. We have given you a perfect example of a home a booklet business here. At this point we feel just a few suggestions will finish your book and put you in business. Our hard cover booklet will never be finished, it will always have pages lacking so you will not be able to project it as a true booklet or a finished product. Our book is always being added to monthly, it will never be complete. However if you have a complete work and which to publish it as a booklet or a book here are a couple of suggestions: most booklets contain 40 or less pages. These pages can be accomplished by completing the cover you wish to have, folding say 10 or 12 pages in half, stapling in the middle, and then gluing your finished book on the correct pages in your folded proposal.
Once you glue your book pages to the folded pages you can see the order in which your pages should be numbered and produced or copied. Then just go ahead and produced that booklet as per and market it.
However, as you notice our booklet here, you will see that our pages are continuous, you will also see that we have a folded centerpiece if we choose to stop our book at this point and publish it but the pages are out of order. Now, if you we choose to publish our book is its order at present, you would publish it as a three-ring binder and add the pages to the back as the pages are gathered in your book. this way you can read to pages each time before you flip a page and the book will always be in order by just adding your pages or insertions to the rear of the booklet. If you should need other information please contact the webmaster.
www.o-me.com Is a business started by one of our members. His business consists of selling and offering wireless, color cameras with audio for recreational vehicles and fifth Wheelers. A lot of his products are sold to people with animals such as horse trailers and livestock haulers. His site has only been up for a short while but the profit margins are phenomenal. Upon talking with him, Will has told me that even on the onset of his business he has made a profit with his camera systems. He has a contact in China that offers him cameras and systems that cannot be purchased in the United States. His markup on some of his products runs 80%, and he still sells its products cheaper than his nearest competitors by 50% in a lot of cases. Congratulations Will, and keep up the good work.
How to advertise business over all the country where trucks travel. This business was discussed about three pages back, when Dawn and her boyfriend started their business on the sides of their cars, carrying signs and parking in prominent places and parking lots and shopping centers. They have since expanded into this business and are doing quite well with it. Might I suggest you go back about three pages and look up Dawn’s business venture. All it takes is a little knowledge and the absolute want to, to have your own business. Things will then begin to fall together for you. Remember all you have to do is take one step at a time, business will come to you once you put forth the effort to establish your business.
Own your own tire changing/repair business on a budget. Get your used tires for free. Carl, Gwen, and their teenage son Thomas, write: Thanks to your help we now own our own business. For many years we just got by because of my lack of education Carl says. Until one day we ran across one of your books with one of our friends who had prospered from one of your programs and opened his own business. Carl goes on to say, that he continually look first for a business his family could do together. By chance one day while Carl was getting a set of tires in a local tire shop, he chanced upon talking to one of the servicemen who gave him some very good tips. The servicemen told him that a lot of the tires that came off of the cars were just pull off tires and there was really nothing wrong with them except that they were slightly worn. Carl asked the service technician if there was a possibility that he might be able to purchase some of the tires to mount on some utility trailers he had built. The technician said, you can have the whole load if you don’t mind paying the one dollar recycle fee per tire. Carl immediately took the service technician up on his word, fearing he would change his mind and started hauling about 550 tires of all sizes away to his home.
In their back yard were stacks of tires for their new business, all under tarps.
The next chore was to locate a cheap tire changer, and with a manual changer they found at a pawn shop, they were in business.
Carl says, ‘best move I could have ever made, It gave us our own small business and Gwen quit her job at Wal-mart the second month we opened up for business.’
As for Gwen, she’s never been happier. She says; ‘Carl is happier than I ever saw him, with our own business we go and do things as a family and have money for extras we never had before, and there is always business at the door for used tires. We can give our customers a real deal and we are doing quite well. I take care of the phone and office and let the men do their thing.
She sends her thanks for our help in helping with the business plans.
Own your own knife/scissor/saw blade sharpening service. With a bit of help from one of our membership, ‘Shep the Sharpener’ is in business. It took a short education to one of our mail order schools to get him prepared for the business he selected, but in the end Spep prevailed with an education and the school even set him up with all the tools he needed to get started. And from Shep says, he is doing quite alright in his new business.
Start a business placing rental and caring for aquariums in offices for businesses. Something Roxanne had always wanted to do was have a pet shop. She especially cared for all the beautiful fish and tranquility of the aquariums.
While we helped her with some information, this business idea was her own.
Roxanne is now into her second year and installs fish tanks and aquariums for professional offices, lawyers, and doctors waiting rooms with both fresh water and salt water tanks… best of all she services them for her clients on a regular rental basis.
Set up low voltage security systems and low voltage lighting for businesses and homes. Tyler was always energetic and willing to try everything, his mother told us in her letter. Even to experimenting with the cat to see just how he would react to electricity. Tyler has found a good vocation in installing low voltage sidewalk lights for professional and residential customers all over his city. ‘Seems like he has found a business he loves and is making a lot of people happy with his decorative systems all over.
Tyler has also branched out to include placing speakers and waterfalls in gardens for his customers throughout our city’, she says. She purchased our business marketing manual when it sold for $19.00 over a year ago. (I did say manual, only one at that time with no CD.)
Rent-A-Handyman. "Have tools, will travel." Do jobs the husband keeps neglecting. Ralph started his business while working for a local grocery chain near our office. He perfected it while the others that he worked with sat and watched TV. Ralph says it was just the thing to do.
Ralph lost his mate several years ago and was helping the local senior population do things around their homes that they could not do for themselves anymore., and he says it just became a business that let him spend his spare time helping others in his age chain to follow his business full time. Ralph has long since retired from his job at the grocery He says he is making as much money part time now as he was making full time with the chain, and enjoys it so much more, with no hassle from his boss. As a matter of fact he says, quote "I love my boss. ME" (We heard that somewhere before)
Own a business mailbox and house numbering. Most cities require it now. This was covered in an earlier note but seems that it is worth repeating, especially with these circumstances, as they contain other information you might want to review.
House cleaning.. "Maids-on-the-go." Started with 1 employee now has 6 employees and 3 trucks. Margie started with just herself and a ragged old 1985 Dodge van, offering her services to her neighborhood. She carried all the supplies she could afford in back.
Persistence and patience, and the fact that she was a single parent of 2 school-aged boys, in school, at the time helped. But the fact that she was a perfectionist helped her achieve a relationship with her customers that won them over in large numbers and she prevailed. Now Margie has 6 other "Maids-on- the-go" working on a 50-50 percentage of the profits in her business. She has done so well in the year she has been in business that her bank has extended a line of credit that has allowed her to provide 3 almost new vehicles for her business
Own your continuous gutter making/ installing business. Ronnie’s Gutters is another business worth mentioning also. Ronnie worked for a gutter manufacturing business in Miami, Florida that catered to the high rise buildings, and installed ‘continuous’ guttering for the people in the county he lived in.
Ronnie got tired of the long commutes through town of over 50 miles one-way and decided to do something about it.
He knew his business well and he knew all he needed was the chance to do his own business with his own equipment.
With help from one of our membership,
Ronnie applied for a loan from a Government Agency and a loan was approved that funded his new business venture.
Now Ronnie works for himself, and has two employees to help him in his venture.
Baby clothes rental business. Gets her baby clothes for free and now offers baby furniture. Rhonda, stopped her business career to have a family and help her husband in his business, now she figured it was her time as the children were in school and she had some time on her hands.
She began by going to yard sales and gathering items for the new ‘baby’. In the process of seeing the over abundance of baby clothes for little or no money, she started a rental of baby items in her 2-car garage.
She says, " It is far more efficient for new mothers to rent herbaby supplies than to go out and purchase new things. After all she says when you pay the $6,000.- $10,000. price for a baby now days, who can afford to put clothes on them and have any extra cash left for anything."
Rhonda also cites the fact that babies grow so fast that you have to buy new things every week.
Seems like Rhonda has hit upon a great idea; now for the furniture she usually gets for almost nothing.
Fingerprint children and (families) keep records. Update regularly. Doug and Amy really have a good thing going. They are doing a service for the community that has been needed for some time in that they fingerprint your children, with the parents as a family; take family pictures, and then keep an up-dated file on them perpetually. Amy says, "We keep the families together as a whole and it is easier for us, plus we send an update notice out each 6 months so we can keep everything up to par. You would not believe the amount of families we have that really appreciate our services, and they can come in and look through the files anytime and see just how their family is growing".
House painting and general repair. ‘Georgie Boy painting contractor’ seems to be on a roll.
George chose one of our members as a mentor, and though he is in another state, they correspond regularly and have become great friends over the internet.
George never had any formal ‘painting education’, he just knew it was a great
idea and he enjoyed it.
George also enjoys the money to do things such as chase the professional fishing circuit.
George says, the best thing that could happen in his life was to become his own boss.
Errand person for contractor. I just received a leaflet from a student who receives a reward of $100.00 for her business venture in this class. Toni, sent me the pink brochure in a business envelope, well addressed to contractors who usually want to get a permit for a job relating to construction. Space forbids a scanned copy but here’s what it said:
Tired of waiting in long lines for your permits?
We think we can help! *Fast*Efficient*Professional*Experienced*
Give us a call to help you with your permitting today!
PERMITS ‘R US…813-926-XXXX
Congrats Toni, and the $255.00 a week for sitting in the permit office part time helps
pay the bills, right? I know it helps the contractor, as his time is expensive.
Sell personalized novelties for kitchen and office. Robert has his own business, even though he purchases his products from a national organization.
Luau prepared Hawaii style and advertised to the neighborhood. Lewis began his cooking of Luau food in Texas at a private campground for RVers. He was so well adapted with the complete meal and socials of the real thing that he has also begun it in his town as a regular for Saturday night get-to-gathers.
Lewis provides the full course meal with all the dance trimmings and even invites the public up for the dancing. According to the letter Lewis writes, things are going so well he plans to do this somewhere for the rest of his life.
In his letter to us, he discloses that the complete Luau and all the fixings cost him about $280. to $300. each Saturday night and takes only one day to prepare. With ticket sales at $25.00 per couple attending. and 50 to 70 people attending every Saturday night Lewis is doing quite well with profits for one days work grossing $900. to $1300. each week.
Not a bad one days work Lewis, for doing what you like to do anyway
Oh yes, and what about the Friday night Luau at the RV park Lewis? With sometimes over 125 people as a captive audience eating your food and partying to the tune of over $1000. net after the party is over.
Lewis let me hand it to you, you are a real party freak; and you say the entertainment is mostly out of your karaoke machine?
Animal sitter for vacationers. Anna is a high school sophomore and tells us she walks dogs in groups of 6 or so at a time, grooms them, feeds them and animal sits them for her regular customers.
She says she makes around $200. each week for her customers while they are gone on trips and out on the town. She really enjoys their company, she says as her walks with so many dogs draws the boys like fleas.
Video and record weddings and special events for people. We have many persons doing this business and writing different ways they carry on business, we’ve just decided to let you read about it elsewhere in the annuls of this book.
Make your own shopper magazine. Promote businesses and people. Sell advertising. Don sells autos and boats in a trader newsletter he is publishing each week.
Don offers to come to you, take pictures of your auto or boat and then places the newsletter for free in small 24 hour corner stores in his town.
His services are just beginning but is profitable enough he says he will never stop it now.
Start a family computer business. The whole family shares. About 3 miles from our office is a small strip mall containing about 10 small businesses. One of those businesses is a computer store owned by a family of Father, mother and two grown daughters, all are computer literate.
The business is booming and sells used computers, and all the boards and software you can imagine.
The business at this time supports 3 families consisting of 7 people quite well.
The father of the ‘clan’ says he is about to retire and just let the younger girls and their husbands have the business with him getting a percentage of the profit. After all he said, "I’ve worked hard at this business for almost 5 years."
Good luck in your retirement…He will soon be 48 years old.
Open a family pizza business. The family pizza and sub business is great for this family who sleep late and work till 9:00 week nights and till 11:00 on Saturdays.
The family of 4 have been open about 2 years and all drive new cars while the 2 twin boys own a nice boat together. They seem to have what it takes to be successful and their food is out of this world and stacked high with meat.
Open a discount store. Sell specials, overstock and consignment items.
Open a fruit and vegetable stand on a busy roadside.
I guess you don’t have to be Mexican to open a fruit and vegetable stand in Florida, but it sure does help the neighborhood, and the owners.Manuel and Maurine opened 2 years ago with just themselves working a small corner lot.
They sold strawberries in season and a few other vegetables and fruits.
Their special was the bananas at 7 pounds for $1.00 and their stand took off like a plane out of control.
They now have over a dozen canvas carport shelters covering their business and 8 employees. One of the employees weighs and bags bananas all day and now they still advertise bananas but at 5 pounds for $1.00. Still a great buy from a corner vegetable stand that is making a fortune for it’s owners, Manuel and Maurine who are seldom there anymore… They’re usually out on their boat fishing.
Prepare an authentic Luau. Just one a week. As we saw with Lewis in just a few pages back, Awanna sends us this report from across the country from his business. "I became a member with AskBil just 2 months ago (June, 2004) and chose this listing, as it really had appeal to me and my mom. We spent a lot of our lives in the Philippines while with my service man dad and we saw this first hand many times. Although I had never prepared this type meal, mom and I decided we would learn all the ingredients to do this just one time and hope it would take on here in lower California.
I was worried that something would happen with the cook out for days and it would be a disaster for us. However things could have not gone more perfectly had I done it a hundred times. We prepared a small pig and 2 turkeys purchased locally and butchered to our request, cooked them together, underground for about 9 hours, and they were perfect.
During that time mom and I prepared all the dishes for 42 people, (at $11.95) tickets sold for the event. I can see where the tickets sold for couples really make lots more money, but this was a real learning experience for us.
To make a short story, we profited about $225. from the cook out on our very first try.
Thank you for this brilliant idea; we are getting our ducks in a row for another try at it this coming month and will drop you a note to let you know how we did.
Lewis really impressed me with his luau idea."
Start a camera shop and supply store (buy on Ebay for resale) While Billy was cruising the Internet, he just happen to check on eBay and at the first point he saw was Vivitar, a camera seller on eBay.
Billy saw some of the camera’s being sold on Vivitar were priced so low that he figured he could start a business by reselling them. Billy purchased several of these cameras at auction and started his own business. Digital cameras would be his main objective as he would not have to carry film or any other items to service the cameras.
Billy started in one of the rooms in his home where he stocked several camera items.
Now only six months into his business venture, Billy is looking into renting a store in a strip mall. Congratulations Billy.
Car tint business. Enlarges to home tinting. Jerry had worked with a friend of his in his car tint business for almost a year before conflicts in business took it’s tole on their friendship.
Jerry, said I saw it coming because my paycheck kept getting smaller and smaller. Finally, Jerry says he had enough and decided it was time to open his own business.
Jerry was not like crazy about tinting Windows on vehicles, so when he started his new business he decided it was time to include homes and businesses into his tinting business.
Jerry says he is not sorry that he made this decision to go residential and business tinting in that more than 50% of his tinting business is now going to tinting homes and storefronts. He says the tinting business is not so critical on homes and storefronts and can be done much easier in that he’s working with flat, square surfaces.
Evidently Jerry’s business is doing quite well, he has rented his own storefront on a main street in his hometown.
Starts with used furniture and now sells new (buys from Rooms To Go.) Mike comes from a long line of furniture salespeople. but for my Mike, opening his own store was not easy. He never was instructed by his dad where he was purchasing his furniture from and had absolutely no contacts or idea where he could purchase wholesale furniture. All Mike knew was that he wanted to be in the furniture business.
Mike started his business by picking up used furniture from stores that delivered new furniture with the understanding that he would pick up the used furniture they had replaced.
In the small store at the Crossroads of two main country roads, Mike and his wife work together and promote their business.
As the headliner states, Mike purchases all his new furniture at this point from rooms to go. No one knows but Mike and his wife, and now us. Sales are brisk and Mike and his wife are doing quite well in their new business line of furniture.
He hopes someone reading this letter will get in touch with him and establish an account so he can buy wholesale furniture from other factories.
Sell and install stereo’ and amps. (learned from Best Buy) Bobby and allen worked together at Best Buy installing stereos and amps in their customers vehicles. Wanting their own business they decided by working together they could establish their own store. With the knowledge of their business and the ambition to open their own store it shows to be quite a success.
How to start and operate a lawn care business (Spring Fever) The lawn care business has been explained in another portion of this site. But spring fever lawncare, owned by Roxanne and Wesley seem to be a profitable business and showing great promise as they’re adding on to their business with tree trimming, extraction, and stump grinding.
E-Mail Marketing If "Surfing the Net" is something you can't get enough of, then maybe you should get paid for it. E-mail marketing is an exciting new business opportunity.
The objective is to compile E-mail address lists to support a client's mailing and then broadcast your client's E-mail to that list. A secondary market is to sell you lists to businesses or individuals who market their goods and services by E-mail. Internet experts will be able to search for and collect lists at a moment's notice. You most likely have all the computer equipment you'll need, although upgrades may be necessary.
Raising Pets For Money. Do you like dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, or fish? Would you enjoy raising them? Why not turn it into a business? Find out what your local pet stores need or what the general market is looking for, such as rabbits and chickens for Easter, or Dalmatians to capitalize on the Disney movie. Not only is this business opportunity fun for animal lovers, it's a great first business for kids. Guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and mice multiply rapidly and make good pets or science projects. Be sure to evaluate your demand first, or you'll be sharing your home with permanent pets. Expanding your business to care for other people's animals is also a possibility. Make sure that zoning laws and other regulations related to raising animals do not affect you.
Artist
One of the most difficult endeavours is earning money through art. The best way to do this is to go commercial. Look at the type of art you excel at:
painting, computer art, or line drawings, and decide how it could benefit businesses. For instance, marketing companies hire artists to do artwork for advertising. You can also develop and draw ads and flyers for small
shops that need publicity. Approach the shops and offer to develop material that they can buy upon approval. As your sales increase, create a portfolio to show to other businesses. Local rock bands and dance clubs like the more radical stuff. Over time, your art and contacts will enable you to expand into more traditional outlets.
Photo Albums
People just don't have the time to develop photo albums, or they do it haphazardly with no idea about how creative a photo album can be. This is a service that gets you out of the house to meet people. You will build a
reputation and can do the work on your kitchen table. You interview clients, go through their pictures, and suggest ways their photo albums can be arranged or improved. Books on the subject are available to help you
improve your skills. Use your family or friends as your initial customers and bring their albums to potential customers to show what you can do. It is rewarding to see how grateful people are with the results.
Agent The best thing that could possibly happen to a home-business owner is to have so much business that you can't do it all yourself. When this happens, you can become an agent for your type of business by sub-contracting excess work out to others and taking a percentage of the fee. In this capacity, you do the billing and maintain the clients. When business is slow, you assume the workload and maintain service to your customers.
Errand Service People who run everything from home businesses to Fortune 500 companies often lack the time to get everything done. That's why there's such a large demand for errand services. If you have a small truck or van, are punctual and trustworthy, and don't mind an occasionally hectic schedule, you can profit from delivering packages, picking up supplies, and handling similar details for harried home business owners and executives alike. To locate clients, check with businesses in your area, or have your friends and family ask their employers if they could use your services.
Family History
Most of us are curious about our ancestors. That's why written accounts of family history or family trees, known as genealogy, make popular gifts.
Why not make this your business? Although the task of digging deeply into someone's past may seem daunting, there is a variety of software packages and books available that will make this task much easier. Visit large
software and book stores to see what's available. To reach your customers, arrange with local card and gift shop owners to let you display your advertising and samples in their stores. Placing advertisements in local
newspapers is a relatively inexpensive way to reach a large audience.
Fix-It Shop
Any appliance, tool, or toy you buy eventually breaks that's a fact of life. Al though America is said to be a disposable society, most of us would rather hold on to what we have rather than incur the cost of buying
something new. Having a knack for fixing household items means you can earn up to $100 an hour, and you never have to leave your own garage! There are many low-cost ways to advertise your services — flyers, classified ads, and the Yellow Pages are just a few. There are also many ways to expand your business; for example, you could offer pick-up and delivery, stock replacement parts, or refurbish toys and appliances and sell them for less than what they'd cost new.
Fund Raiser
Do you enjoy working with the public, and helping those less fortunate? If so, you can put your people skills to work by offering yourself to local community, hospital, school, and civic groups as a fund raiser. You help
the group raise money for its cause, and take a percentage of the amount for your fee. Your organizational skills, pleasant phone manner, and ability to develop effective direct mail pieces mean success in this career. Keep in mind that those who act as fund raisers for charities are often expected to do so on a volunteer basis, but this is a great way to
gain experience, make valuable contacts, and build your reputation.
Handyman Service
Leaky faucets, clogged drains, doors that stick the list of minor home repair needs is almost endless. Most of us just don't have the time or the know-how to tackle these problems ourselves. If you're good with your hands and have a general knowledge of home repair, then start a handyman service. Charge your clients less than the professionals. Your customers' savings is your gain! You'll need a good set of tools and a truck. It's also a good idea to check with your city to see what licensing is required. Begin your business with your friends and family, then expand into your neighborhood.
Herb Garden
Cooking with home-grown herbs holds a special appeal these days. If you have a green thumb, you can capitalize on this culinary trend by growing herbs to sell to small restaurants, specialty shops, health-food stores, or even your friends and neighbors. Use your computer to create attractive,
eye-catching labels for your packages. Cultivating an herb garden can require very little space - in fact, you can grow a fair assortment in flower pots on your window sill! Put your gardening expertise to work in
another way by becoming a "gardening consultant," — assisting your clients in setting up their own herb gardens.
Mail Services
Companies of all types and sizes use direct mail to advertise goods and services. However, many of these companies may not have the personnel to undertake a mass mailing, especially if it involves a large base of potential clients. That's where you come in. Contracting with these businesses to handle their mass mailings could result in ample financial rewards. You'll need a computer, special software to create labels and process lists, and most importantly, clients. Check with local businesses, especially those involved with publishing, computer accessories, or special events. Friends, relatives, and business associates can also provide leads. Expand your business by writing the promotional material, obtaining the target lists, and maintaining the client lists.
Sewing Service
Do you have a talent for sewing? Starting a sewing service in your home is a profitable and enjoyable business. You al ready have the equipment and skill, and the demand is great. Busy professionals need to keep their clothes in shape. Local dry cleaning and clothing stores are good sources for leads. Also, try advertising in the classified section of your local newspaper, or posting flyers in your neighborhood. Put your creativity to work by creating curtains and other home decorations, or sewing costumes for holidays and stage productions. To expand, consider the large demand for upholsterers.
BBQ Catering Service If you like to barbecue, get compliments as a chef, and like to meet people, why don't you set up a barbecue catering service? You need a truck, portable barbecue pits, and a little marketing. Send out flyers, post them at grocery stores, or advertise in your local newspaper or weekly ad magazine. People will love having outdoor parties with you showing up, setting up, cooking, and cleaning up afterwards. You can offer various options on meat and expand out to more and more food options and drinks. You thought outdoor cooking was fun; well, it's profitable also.
Professional Organizer
If you notice the messes in other people's homes and businesses, then maybe you should be an organizer. There are many books on organizing and a multitude of products that help conserve space or provide filing or
stacking capability. Gather material on the subject. To start your business, practice on people you know for a small fee, then use this
experience to sell yourself to others. You can purchase and mark up ready-made products, or call in carpenters to put in closet organizers, shelves, and furniture. What people save in time and money will more than make up the difference.
Apartment Renewal
Apartments must be cleaned, painted, and repaired after renters vacate. Since this is a frequent event, this event provides an opportunity for you to make money. Apartment unit sizes, damage, and cleaning needs vary widely. So develop estimates after a walk-through or charge by the hour.
Cleaning equipment and a small truck will get you started and college students can provide help. Your target market is defined, so visit and send mailers to apartment complexes, rental management companies, condo complexes, and also offer your services to real estate brokers who need property prepared for sale.
Baby Furnishings.
Baby furniture is constantly being cycled in and out of homes and sold at garage sales. Acquiring baby furniture can be expensive for new parents, so a service that will satisfy them and give you a good income is to stock their homes with what they need. You can get beds, chairs, tables, potty seats, and the like at garage sales. Clean and paint them, and turn them around for sale. Market at pediatrician offices, Lamaze training classes, and prenatal care services. You can provide single furniture items to full set-ups, and get the parents to resell them to you after they no longer need them, ready for you to make money on them again.
Tax Assistance
You can be the answer to the April 15th blues. Use your accounting background and your computer to process tax returns from your home. This business is seasonal and starts out slowly, building over time as you get returning clientele the next years. There are a number of great tax preparation software packages available that makes this task easier. Start by doing returns for your family and friends, then use them to help get business referrals. Be sure to keep up the with latest tax rules and join accounting organizations to work on accreditations.
Used Computer Sales
Are you a tinkerer who likes to take computers apart and put them together?
Used computers that are gathering dust can make money for you. Although technology advances rapidly, much of what people need computers for can be handled by the simplest of machines. Make yourself available to buy the obsolete machines at fire sale prices. Many of the parts are interchangeable; you can cannibalize and rebuild computers that are fine for normal use, and add new parts as necessary. Then, sell the computers with your own warrantee. This is a business your high-school children may love to assist with, or even run. Repair books and training are readily available.
Flea Market Sales
Flea markets are like the ultimate garage sale. If you like garage sales maybe you should become a participant in flea markets. There are a number of products that you can sell: Your own crafts, collectibles from your own hobby collections (trains, coins, comics, etc), and products for resale (polishes, toys, tools, garage sale items you purchased). Some markets are opportunities to sell your skills or services such as furniture refinishing, car detailing, sewing and handyman services. Find out what flea markets are local to your area and which apply to your products or skills. Contact the organizers to find the cost of booths, qualifications, tax laws and other necessary information.
Rental business
Ever thought you might want to start your own rental business?
One of our members had purchased an ‘out of business’ lawn care, which included mowers, weed-eaters and an assortment of items of the like.
Not wanting to do the mowing business himself, he rents the equipment to his neighbors and does quite well.
He has a contract with the users that states if they damage anything, they pay to repair it to its original state.
Tom rents hand tools also like shovels and rakes and post hole diggers from his house.
He has found out that homeowners had rather pay a few dollars once a month to rent equipment and tools, rather than pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to own a tool they might use once in a month or year.
Tom has a business that supplements his social security and helps his neighbors too. Also Tom is always on the lookout for good used equipment at rock bottom prices to rent out to his customers or occasionally to sell at a profit.
Be an event planner…
Sarah is a person who enjoys social events.
During an event at a local home where the family was involved in a family business and very busy, she came upon the idea of helping plan all this family’s parties and business gatherings.
It has worked out very well for her and now all her work time is spent planning and creating birthday parties to weddings, and to any social event for her clients who were first referred by you guess who, The original business family.
Dave the Mobile Notary-
‘We come to You’.
Most new independent businesses are going mobile and staying small for economic reasons…what you make is yours!
Brush-hogging and mowing…If you have equipment already just try this with small investments and see where it leads you.
A.M. Coffee shop. If you have a good sized living room or access to roadside advertising, this is a business you can start in your home… Where do you think the restaurant business started?
A.M. Breakfast bar…This again is dependent on a few outside areas. If you can provide bacon and eggs competitively, have at it.
Coffee/ Doughnut breakfast store. Dunkin Doughnut style. You can even purchase doughnuts from Krispy Kreme at wholesale prices so long as you are not competitive with their areas.
Package Wrapping/Shipping store.. This is one everybody can do.
CD Creation/copying business. I started this business over 4 years ago With just a simple 7 head CD recorder costing me less than $600. and that included over 500 CD blanks to start my business. Later I added a DVD recorder and have increased my sales very easily to a point that it is better than survival. I do not even advertise it anymore as I have plenty of regular customers. I can produce 6 of either CDs or DVDs in half a minute. Cost to me is less than .10 cents each and I charge $4.00 to $4,30 each recorded…A very good business has developed for me.
Retail/reselling business developed when you find bargain products you can resell at a profit. Yard sale products will fall under this header.
Used furniture store… Buy at estate sales, garage and yard sales.
Visit auction houses to bid on specials and bulk items you re- sell at your business.
Minor repairs for the elderly… make yourself available to do chores and jobs the elderly cannot do because of age or stability, ie, roof repair or jobs to hard/high for the aged.
Pet sitter in or out side of the owners home/ yours…Washing and feeding will be included for their ‘family’ when they are away.
Children sitting in your/their home for persons who work or wish to go out for the evening or so.
Auto / RV /Boat detailing aat your home or theirs, Last thing the owners want to do when they just get back from a vacation or trip is to clean up a camper, boat or RV.
Here is something I do every year…’pre-season plant starting’. Every February I start planting my plant-beds and every spring with a simple sign out front, advertise that I have tomato, peppers, etc for sale about the last of March and April. I have my own garden so why not help the neighborhood. By the way Wal-mart charges $2.97 for one or two plants in a cheap pot… why not you?
Yard garbage, trash clean-up. Have a pick-up or trailer? Each spring people want their yards cleaned… they call it ‘spring cleaning’,
Mobile home washing, Roof painting, and window cleaning… How many times have you heard ‘I don’t do windows’.
Grocery buying and delivery… The elderly could use this service and most of the elderly can afford to pay for it. Just look to see who has the money left to provide this service.
Elder Sitting and company- Read books to them and for the blind or just be company that the ir children do not take time for anymore.
Be a ‘Computer Doctor or Nurse’ If you have that ability, establish yourself as a setup/ repairman. You have an open door for charges and information. I paid over $300.00 to a computer man for setup and instructions on my first computer.
Do you love to fish? Start a business with used and new fishing tackle; you’ll be surprised just how much you can charge for used tackle and repairs.
Be an Amway or Avon distributor. If you like to meet people this could be for you.
If you have a vocation, train an apprentice or take on a partner with of for your business and/or license. Always remember to protect and control any license you own.
Ever thought of Website Design? Right now might be the time. Boy could I have used this service a while back. Now I have 3 running websites www.askbil.com , and
www.e-mailcall.com
These websites are very simple one page sites but they do the job for me.
"Recycle" the bike store… I have 3 students who are making a great living with this; might want to try it if you have little or no competition in your area. Police and salvage sales are held in most areas and you can oick up a rideable bike for pennies.
Hard-wood delivery. In our area we had several hurricanes that brought down a lot of trees, mostly water oaks. There are 2 men who were smart and brought these trees to vacant lots or in their back yards, cut them up/split them and now are selling them to barbecue houses year round.
In the preceding pages you have been taught how to START, ORGANIZE, and RUN a business of your own, using a 17 year-old college kid as an example. A college kid who sold enough light bulbs to pay for a year of college and live, without working, during that year, and in only six weeks, part time; and how anyone can do it today.
You have been taught how a simple business can start from scratch with just a simple idea, and blossom into a full-fledged business giving its’ owner great wealth and freedom. Below are 5 businesses that are making money for their owners today.
Business Examples:
Own your own mobile computer business.
Eric had worked in the computer business for a long time, as a technician for other companies.
Eric had always wanted to be in business for himself. He had seen for years how he had made money for other people, other businesses. Now he had decided today was his day.
Eric had all his own tools, and a nice automobile, everything he needed to open his own business including the knowledge.
His day dawned bright and clear, as he had decided to go down and open his first business venture. So getting in his car, his first thought was magnetic signs for his car doors. They were simple, "the computer doctor," and then his cell phone number.
‘The Computer Doctor’
phone 859-XXXX
for in-home service
As soon as he had ordered signs, Eric continued his mission on down to the county courthouse, where he purchased an occupational license, and at this point, Eric became a business owner with just one simple occupational license for his county.
Eric didn’t stop there, he continued on down to the local newspaper where he placed a 10-day classified ad telling the local area he was in business and that if they had computer problems he would be glad to service and explain how computers worked to his customers.
Eric now says the classified ad was not necessary. He says the signs on the sides of his car did all the advertising that was necessary to start his business.
Also Eric adds, for the first few days of getting his business started he made a special effort to park his car, with signs posted on each side, in the parking lot of some of the neighborhood computer stores, especially Best Buy, Circuit City and Sears, and waited for the calls to come in on his cell phone.
Eric sets up new computers for customers and teaches them how to use them. He also does work on used computers in the customer’s home. Seldom does he take a modem into his home for repair, but admits once in awhile it is necessary.
According to Eric, his first month income almost tripled his previous months income working for the business he had just left, Eric was in business for himself.
Eric feels that any person who is willing to establish a business with his characteristics, out of his car or vehicle, only needs a vocation to succeed.
Business # 52.
Own your own Notary, Faxing business in your home.
Suzanne, a house mother of two children, looking for a business of her own that she could run from her home, was assisting her parents in Idaho when she came upon a sign in a front yard which said:
After hour
Notary services.
Faxes sent here
With a plain paper fax machine costing less than $100, and a $50 notary application, Susanne was in business.
According to Suzanne, her first month grossed over $300.
Business #31
Your very own Baking Business from your home. Are you good at baking? Melissa was.
Melissa, a housewife and mother enjoyed baking and cooking pies, cakes and cookies for her children and family.
Melissa’s home was always bustling with children, and their parents. She had an outgoing personality, and her cakes, pies and cookies were always available to anyone coming into her home.
It did not take much persuasion from her friends to start charging and baking for the neighborhood, after all she was the best baker in town, just ask the neighborhood.
Melissa now supplements her husband’s income to the tune of several hundred dollars per week, and just in her spare time, making cakes, pies, and cookies and the specialty cakes for weddings and other occasions.
Melissa now employs ladies who cater full meals to many homes each day for working families.
Melissa says she started her business with no money down, in that she was doing it before, for free.
She also adds as a parting joke in her testimonial: My husband always jokes to my customers telling them, "I always told Melissa there was dough in her bread."
Business #74
Have your own key making business and place it anywhere. Bill, a retired man, wanted a business to take up a part of his time, say two or three days a week and still make a fairly good income.
While looking through a magazine, he hit upon the idea of placing a key machine in the local flea market as there was not one there, and he saw the market for one in the area.
The internet ‘yellow pages’ provided him with access to key blanks, and to his original key cutting machine. He now has four machines cutting different types of keys.
According to Bill, all he needed to begin his business was a cheap key cutting machine, approximately $200 in key blanks, an occupational license, a sales-tax number, and the wish to have my own business he says. In four months at the flea market Bill says, he never has to depend on Social Security again as he has a business venture he can go anywhere he wants, and wishes he had done this years before while raising his family.
Business #5
Make custom All-SEASON cards on your computer for your new business.
Alice got her business from her children.
Last Christmas, while in the process of writing Santa Claus letters to their children, Alice thought how nice it would be if all the children could get a letter from Santa Claus, bragging on how good they had been that year.
Alice ran a classified ad in the local newspaper three weeks before Christmas. Here’s what it said:
Excite your children with a
letter from Santa, and register your children for letters on each birthday and 7 holidays throughout the year.
letter from Santa
Work at home mother of 2.
Call Alice 858 –. XXXX
Alice has expanded her computer-generated business
to include fingerprinting and photographing all the children and keeping records on file if they should ever come up missing. Not only is she doing a tremendous service for the parents, and the children, but also she is able to provide information directly to the police and sheriff departments if her service is ever needed. Her letter to children charge started at $19.95. each child, per year for 8 holidays, and good report cards Her extended business grosses her $99.00 per child, and she tries to link the service to all members in the family creating a family file with each family paying just $199. for the complete lifetime service and a membership charge of $15.00 for the yearly update.This next business is for the owner that wants to go the extra mile; Requires a website and a bit of ingenuity.
When the owners of pets went on vacation and could not take their pets with them Don and Nancy were right there….
Don and Nancy wanted to do extra and build a whopper of a business, so… They started a ‘Pet Vacation’ effort that included a website, updated daily with pictures of the owners pets being displayed via internet.
Nancy’s job required that she took ‘Happy Pictures’ of all the pets in her care and placed them each day on the website for the owners to see just how happy and content the pets were in their ‘Vacation paradise’ while the owners were vacationing.
